Not just wanting to refresh their landscape for curb appeal, the environmentally-conscious family at this Rocky River home requested a special kind of planting palette: One that placed emphasis on native and “dual-use” selections. The plants were to be attractive and fairly easy to maintain, but should also give back purposefully to the environment, local wildlife, and the family’s mission to live responsibly. Thus, Boulevard Studios selected flowering edibles, herbs with interesting textures, and bright pollinator plants, complemented by evergreens and grasses for year-round interest. Cross-pollinating fruit trees in the backyard will provide buffering from the adjacent highway, while teaching the family’s young children about caring for and living off the land.
