Boulevard Studios designed this private Japanese garden for a home in Toledo, Ohio. The owners, seasoned travelers and feng shui enthusiasts, wanted a quiet space with a walking path that would connect an existing patio to the home's front gardens. Slabs from an underused patio "stage" were cut to size to create axes, direct views, and provide comfortable access through the garden. A gravel swirl in the center creates an ideal spot for a bench—also from repurposed stone found on site—for sitting and therapeutic raking around larger stones. While the plant palette is deer resistant, the client went to great lengths to locate and secure special plant selections that would create interest and truly represent the forms and textures of a traditional Japanese garden.
